When I was 13 years old, I suffered a major knee injury. I’d been doing “squat thrusts” in gym class when my right knee suddenly locked up. I struggled for about an hour, trying to get it straightened back out but failed. After gym class, one of my teachers helped me to the office where I phoned my dad to pick me up. He rushed me to the ER, where they discovered I’d shredded the cartilage to pieces. It was literally hanging by a thread. I was terrified with what my doctor was telling me, that I could possibly be confined to a wheel chair if they didn’t operate. I was extremely lucky though, I had surgery the next day. I still have severe knee pain and surprisingly, I still have swelling and cannot fully straighten that leg out but I could’ve been much worse off! Around the same time I had knee surgery, my grandmother was also having knee replacement surgery! She suffered with years of pain and her age did nothing to help with that!
