Summer

How did you spend summers when you were a kid?

I spent a good portion of my summers visiting with my grandparents (on both sides of family). I always enjoyed this part of my childhood summers!

On one side, my mother’s; My grandparents had a farm! My youngest sister Nikki and I spent our days helping feed the animals, chasing the chickens back to their coops (this was the highlight of our day and the worst part of theirs, poor chickens), collecting eggs first thing in the morning and swinging from the front porch swing, on their wrap-around porch at night, just before bed! Fishing was another thing we enjoyed doing, since my grandparents owned hundreds of acres of farmland, there were many, many ponds around! We spent a lot of time snapping peas and shucking corn too, which wasn’t really the best of times but the stories we were told by my grandparents, made it more than tolerable!

On the other side, my dad’s; My grandparents had a lot of cats, one pony and one horse! Blue-eyes, my pony, was awesome! He was so gentle and sweet! I remember one afternoon, while getting ready to saddle up for a ride around their enclosure, Nikki decided she wanted to ride Blue-eyes instead of her horse, Dutches (she was a feisty ole gal)! Blue-eyes wasn’t too keen on the idea, so within a matter of seconds, he sat down and sent Nikki sliding down into a big ole pile of fresh manure! That was hilarious and the image of her landing in that pile-o-pooh, will stay with me forever!

The time I had left in the summer would be spent between the local swimming pool and going on weekend trips to the beach!

Summer has never been my favorite season because of the heat but those were some of the best times of my life and made for some of the best memories ever!
