I know you guys have probably been dealing with this for a long time, but I just wanted to say that when I hurt my back I iced it till I nearly gave myself frost bite for a week and took aspirin to help with pain control and inflammation. I never got up unless it was not avoidable, and after the first week I started on a series of stretches I found in a back book (all the typical ones). I did them 3 times a day with ice in between (I was seriously motivated to get up 'cause I had no benefits or leave at the job I had at the time) and after about 2 weeks total I was doing well. I did continue stretching and abdominal excercises, because I never wanted it to happen again! My husband likes heat when he hurts his back...but he continues to injure his about 2x a year, and my iced excercised back has only gotten hurt once more in the 20 years since that episode.
