Eye Take Pictures

As if I don’t have enough blogs to maintain - enter Eyetakepictures.com. This came about a couple of days ago, while trying to figure out a couple of domain names (for future projects). I honestly didn’t think the domain name would be available but thankfully, it was. This will be my daily photoblog. And yes, I mean DAILY. I am going to push myself to take and post one picture everyday for the next year.

Keep in mind that I’m only just beginning so there isn’t that much there, but in time, there will be loads more to see.

Designer kitchen

One of my favorite rooms in a house is the kitchen and for me personally, I am very picky about the colors used in my own. I tend to lean more towards white cabinetry and prefer granite counters but I am open to other ideas. I hope that when Jo and I buy our next home, we’ll have the opportunity to do more in our kitchen than we have in the past. In fact, I would love to have a luxury kitchen if the funds are available to us.

In trying to get some ideas on things we can incorporate into our own kitchen, I was browsing through the Designer Kitchen Gallery over at EW Kitchens. I notice that I tend to go for more traditional styles than anything else, so naturally that was the first gallery I browsed through. On page 3, I fell in love - beautiful white cabinetry, stainless steel, recessed lighting and gorgeous honey colored hardwood floors - it’s no wonder. This particular design reminds me a lot of the French Country styles, which is a favorite of mine.

Since I’m opening myself to other ideas, I decided I would also check out the design under the Transitional and Contemporary galleries, which my husband browsed through with me. We mutually agreed that page 9 under the Transitional was our favorite of that section - the neutral color pallet works really well in this design - and page 3 under the Contemporary was our favorite of that section - the dark, richness of the cabinetry is perfect with the stainless steel.

If you’re looking for ideas for your own kitchen project, you should definitely check out the Designer Kitchen Galleries over at EWKitchens.com. I’m really glad I did. I have some great ideas to work with!

Wrong side

I hate waking up on the wrong side of the bed. Normally it’s everyone else but I guess it was my turn this morning because I woke up in the foulest mood ever. Every little thing is ticking me right off and admittedly for no real reason. I’m trying my best to keep it from showing but it’s difficult and I think everyone is “on to me”.

In other news; it snowed last night. We had fire going after dinner last night, outside and within about an hour or so we noticed stuff falling from the sky. At first we though it might have been the ashes from the fire but then we looked to the light pole in the driveway and realized it was actually snowing. They say that every year the weather is really bad on Halloween, I guess we’ll see if the weather keeps with tradition.

Without

We were all talking about Nan’s passing earlier today, after reading some of the notes she left to some of us (only a few). Jo’s mom was telling us that if Pop had passed away before Nan, that Nan would lose everything. Neither ever got any kind of insurance - term life insurance, life insurance, accidental death insurance - nothing! Jo’s mom said that Nan was so worried that Pop would go first, even though she (Nan) was the sick one and Nan was so worried about losing the house and what have you.

I couldn’t imagine being stuck in that particular situation.

Beach photos

As promised, here are a couple of photos I took down on the beach yesterday afternoon.

One of many snails on the rocks & shells

Looking out to the rock islands

There are many, many more to go through. These are the first two I managed to open up a few minutes ago. I will go through the remaining 60 or so and post a few more later tonight. There may even be more, if the sun stays out because I plan to go back down there this afternoon!

Grandfather clock

I can remember visiting my great grandmother as a child and being in awe of the grandfather clock in her hallway. Though it was pretty old, it was absolutely gorgeous and well taken care of. When she passed, I had hopes of ending up with it but it was such a wonderful clock that I knew that would likely not happen - I was right. I did promise myself a few years back that I would have a grandfather clock in my own home someday and I meant it. I think grandfather clocks make for a nice piece of decor and they are functional.

I love the Howard Miller grandfather clocks, especially the “Roberston”. It has the antique look to it and at the same time, has an almost modern feel because of the dial and chime. The detail put into not only the dial and chime, but also into the wood is really beautiful. This is definitely the style that I would want (and plan to have) in my own home someday, specifically in our formal living room. Of course, when I do decide to buy my own grandfather clock, I will need to know how to maintain it. Thankfully I found a place to learn how to do just that.

If you enjoy grandfather clocks too, have a look at 1-800-4clocks.com.

All the laughs

Despite the sadness over the last couple of days, we have all managed to have some pretty good laughs. I decided I would share a few of these with you.

  • Jo’s great uncle Dave backed into the large post in Pop’s (Jo’s grandfather) yard, which had a large wooden boat on top of it. The boat came toppling down onto the back of Dave’s car. There was minimal damage, so it was hard not to laugh and poke fun. Each time I see Dave now, I tell him “Drive safe and watch out for boats crossing” and just the other day, he was being a little silly and got down on one knee in front of me asking “Will you take my hand” and I responded back with “Sure, it seems you need a hand with driving”.. HAHA.
  • Jo’s aunt Brenda and I have gotten really close over the last week. After people started dropping off loads of food and goodies, she and I noticed two lemon meringue pies. We swore that once things calmed down, she and I, along with a fork a piece would grab a whole pie and dart off to the basement and eat one (whole pie lol) ourselves. Saturday was our day. We called it our “secret society”. She grabbed my arm, pulled me into the kitchen where we grabbed our spoons (we figured we’d get bigger bites this way hahaha) and instead of the basement, we headed to a spare room. After about 2 bites, Jo’s aunt Marilyn came in - we were caught and there are photos to prove it! lol
  • Going through photo albums for the tribute DVD / CD to Nan, we found a picture of Jo’s uncle Derrick. He is a riot. He is like the male version of my sister Nikki. We found a photo of Derrick in a white and red checkered shirt, with denim overalls. I fell into a fit of laughter and said “Derrick, Heehaw phoned, they said they want their costume back!”… Laughs filled the room. We laughed so hard that our stomachs were in pure knots and our eyes filled with tears.
  • You see, I get along with Jo’s family so well because they remind me so much of my own. I feel right at home with all of them. Everyone kept telling me how well I fit in, especially with my comments / jokes about Jo’s uncle and great uncle.

Colleen (sister in law) and I went down to the beach yesterday. It took all of about a minute to walk down there. It was low tide, so you could walk across the rock bed (like a sandbar) to the island across from the harbor. We didn’t make it that far before the tide started to come in though because we stopped and took a few photos - snails, muscles and jellyfish galore. I have photos to share later on. I just downloaded some photo editing software to Jo’s computer and will hop to them.

    Sleepy time

What a long and exhausting day this has been.

Today was Jo’s grandmother’s funeral. It was absolutely beautiful - a celebration of her life. It shouldn’t have been such a surprise to see over 500 people show up but you know, it actually was. The sanctuary was jam packed! Jo’s sister sang a song, as did one of his aunts. There were a few tears of course but the memories that were shared were so sweet and there were many laughs, as that was something she loved to do. Naturally it was really hard on some of the family; Jo and his cousin Lee had a really hard time being pallbearers and I honestly don’t know how either of them made it through but they did.

We all congregated back to the house (Jo’s grandparents), where I decided to kick up my feet. Too bad there was no recliner though, I think I could’ve gotten in a really nice nap. No, I take that back. There was a crowd of about 30-40 at the house from about 4:30pm - 8:00pmish.

Now, I think I’m going to prop my feet up and chit chat with Jo’s mom and dad for a bit before bed.

    California dreamin’

I would love to just get away and just relax for a few days. I could see myself soaking up the California sun, resting up in a lovely little cottage - something like Mendocino lodging. I’ve always wanted to visit California and be able to say I dipped my toes into the Pacific Ocean. And after everything we’ve been through in the last few days, a nice vacation sounds wonderful. Jo says we’ll do it someday because he would even like to do something like that. Who knows, maybe it’ll happen someday!
