A few years back, I worked for a financial institution that charged some of the most outrageous fees (anywhere from $32 for an unpaid check to $37 to pay an insufficient check without returning it unpaid and best of all, $30 to even join the bank - note, this was NOT a credit union) I had ever seen. The worst part was you would likely never see a refund for them. I can also sympathize (and relate) to the customer because I have also been on the receiving end of some pretty outrageous bank fees, that I never got refunds for.
Bank Charges in the UK have become such a problem that in July of this year (2007), the Office of Fair Trading has frozen claims against banks who charge excessive fees. In fact, there is a full inquiry pending.
