While Winter in Newfoundland seems to limit what one can do outdoors, there’s still a lot to do indoors - especially if you’re working on home improvements.

My in laws accomplish a lot of their home improvements and DIY projects during the Winter months. Last year they redid the floors in different parts of their home. This year it was a toss up between redoing the kitchen (entirely) or redoing the single bathroom. Feeling the bathroom wouldn’t take nearly as long, they opted for this and will get it underway in the coming weeks.

They’re hoping to accomplish a lot of cosmetic things like; the wall color and flooring. On the flip-side, they’re also hoping to install a new vanity. Vanities are a great way to add extra storage. They seriously need extra storage space and I think they’ll obtain that if they bring in a vanity. Currently they merely have a sink with one storage area below, which is rather small. By choosing to add a vanity they’ll not only achieve adding storage, they’ll also achieve adding nice, personal touch and combat the cosmetic aspect of it.

My mother in law was just talking about bird baths the other day. I think she’s hoping that she gets one for mother’s day or possibly her birthday (both are right close together in the Spring). I actually think it’d be a really nice piece to add to their garden, especially with as many birds as they have around here. It’s so peaceful here and just to sit outside watching and listening to nature is really relaxing. I think I’ll talk to Jo about it and maybe between us, my sister in law and my father in law, we can all get a really nice one for her. I really enjoyed browsing through the bird bath and bird fountains over at Online Discount Mart, especially the frog and lotus ones. If it were for me personally, I would go with the frog or cat just because I love frog decor and love cats, but I think the lotus one would suit Karen (my mother in law) much better, and her garden which already features similar items. We could keep up with the theme she’s got going already. I’m not sure what material would be best for the weather conditions here though, so I’ll have to talk with her a little bit more about this to make sure we get something that will be strong enough to withstand the sometimes harsh weather here in Newfoundland.

With all the talk Jo and I have been doing about this future move of ours, it’s really put me into “decor” mode. I’ve found myself browsing through internet stores, shopping for little things that will help turn out apartment into our home. You know, just adding a few personal touches around the place so that it doesn’t look so default.

Well, it just so happens that we’ll be needing a lot of curtains in our apartment because the apartments we’ve narrowed it down to have a lot of windows. You know, one of the things that really stinks about living where we do (a small town in Newfoundland) is that it is nearly impossible to find home decor in the styles my husband and I like. One of the biggest issues that Jo and I face in our bedroom is a lack of space. Now keep in mind that we moved from Calgary, Alberta to Newfoundland and took everything we could fit into our truck. I think I will make a run to Gander later on today and looking for some new home lighting fixtures for our bedroom. There is currently just one small light fixture but it is rather dim and not putting out enough light at all. The one light we have is mounted on the wall, so it might be a difficult task to find something, especially something that is going to put out enough light.

I love changing things up and swapping out the lighting fixtures is inspiring me to change our bed linens too. Well, actually, I had an idea for the bedding before we got here. When we stayed overnight in Quebec, the room we shared had beautiful brown, white and aqua striped linens. I told Jo I wanted something just like that.

Maybe I will just redo our room all together!
