I was just flipping through the channels and saw the local news was coming on. I tuned in just in time to learn about a woman in Edmonton (about 4 hours north of us) who is taking on Facebook.com. Facebook pulled her page because of a photo the woman posted of herself, breastfeeding her song. Facebook’s message to the woman;
” We do not allow users to send threatening, obscene and harassing messages.”
From the article at Calgary.ctv.ca.
I’m not a mother (I don’t think my kitty cats count as children.. since I can’t claim them on my taxes) but I’ve got plenty of “mommy” friends. Breastfeeding does not offend me in the least. I honestly don’t understand why it offends anyone. It’s natural. The mother is providing a “meal” to her child. How is that obscene?
I’ve heard some people argue that children may see the mother feeding the child and begin to ask questions. The parent then feels “put on the spot”, in the sense of having to explain to the child what the other mother is doing. My response to that; What do you tell your child when they see their pet nursing their young? When my nephews have asked similar questions about their adult female dog feeding her babies, we’ve explained that “Momma dog is feeding baby dog..” I don’t understand why it would be any more difficult to explain to a child why a human adult is doing the same - “Momma is feeding baby”. Maybe that’s just me.
Either way. I think it’s crazy that Facebook.com pulled this woman’s page and is planning to permanently delete it. From the looks of the photo in the article linked, there’s no skin showing anyway. The baby is feeding. It isn’t like she’s just flopped her breast out for the world to see. If there’d been a man attached to the breast instead of the baby, I could understand the argument better. The man wouldn’t be feeding.. or I would hope not.
